MEEKER I Twenty-eight teams filled the Meeker Golf Course last weekend and although only a handful were local, two of them placed in two of the three flights in the annual couples tournament. Couples from three states competed in the annual two-day, 36-hole event.
“Of all the tournaments, I think this one is the most fun,” local golf pro Jim Cook said. “The majority of the teams are from out of town, it’s a nice get-away weekend for them and when the losers go away happy, you know you’re doing something right.”
Meeker locals George and Peggy Back had the best net score in the second flight and also the best gross score of all Meeker couples. The Backs were two shots behind the eventual second flight champs after the first day and gained a stroke Sunday, but instead of taking the second best gross score (163), they took the net title with a net score of 117.
Roy and Karen Knappe of Parker won the second flight with a gross score of 162, while Jim and Evelyn Woosley of Utah finished second with a gross score of 164. David and Beth Dodson of Glenwood Springs had the second best net score (122) in the second flight.
Meeker golfers Kirk and Deb Henderson, the only local couple to compete in the championship flight, finished the two-day event with the second best net score of 126. Roy and Dorlene Byers of Glenwood Springs had the best net score of 113.
Doug and Britt Choate of Battlement Mesa were the best golfers on the course both days, easily winning the championship flight with a 137, 15 shots ahead of Kirk Blaszyk and Julie Gortsema of Glenwood Springs.
In the third flight, Michael and Jan Peterson of Grand Junction won with a gross score of 157, while Todd and Valerie LaRoche of Denver finished second with a 170. Rob Peterson and Diane Jones of Wyoming had the best net score of 117 in the third flight, giving fellow Wyoming couple Lee and Linda Hanson second, three shots back.
