Locals do well in two-man tourney

Erik Brown (right) waited for Lex, his two-man best-ball partner for the past 18 years, to tap in his ball before making a birdie putt on No. 8. The local couple had the best net score in the championship flight of the Mountain Valley Bank’s two-man best ball tournament.

MEEKER I Erik Brown and Lex Collins have been partners in the annual two-man best ball golf tournament the past 18 years and the pair turned in the best net score in the championship flight of the two-day event at the Meeker Golf Course.
“We haven’t won every year but we’ve never been out of the money as a pair,” Brown said of the successful partnership.
Brown and Collins shot a one-over-par 69 the first day and took four shots off the second, finishing with a gross score of 134 and a winning net score of 115. There was a three-way tie for the second best net score between Meeker’s Chad Luce and Bill de Vergie, Don and David Ice, and John Johnson and John Cota, all of whom finished seven shots behind Collins and Brown’s net score.
Johnson and Cota led the championship flight after the first 18-holes, shooting a five-under-par 63 but added 14 shots in Sunday’s round. Craig Nichols and Keith Humerickhouse shot a 66 the first day and a 61 Sunday to win the championship flight with a gross score of 127. Two-time defending champions Doug Choate and Joe Elliot finished second, one shot behind. Rangely’s Robby Elam and Dennis Rohn finished third with a gross score of 141, one stroke better than Mike Hirons and Joe Tonozzi, who finished fourth.
Meeker teams dominated the second flight with Andy and Pat Coryell leading from start to finish. The two brothers led after the first day, shooting a two-over-par 70 and following up with a 71 Sunday. Harry Watt and Pat Hughes trailed the Coryells by one shot both rounds to finish second. Jeff Asselin and Randy Hall tied with H.P. Hansen and John Sidel of Glenwood Springs.
Irv Griffin and Rod Crawford finished with the best net score (113) in the second flight, seven shots better than Dale and Kurtis Dunbar, who tied with Kevin Sweeney and Phil Gallagher of Glenwood Springs. George Kuck and Greg Ackerman finished fourth with a net score of 121.
“We want to thank Mountain Valley Bank for all they do in sponsoring the tournament,” local golf pro Jim Cook said.
The Meeker Golf Course will host a pro-am tournament July 15, preceding the Lischke Memorial July 16-17.
