MEEKER I Add $2,000 to the prize money and golfers come from all around. That’s what Marvine Ranch did and 80 golfers showed up to play in the Marvine Ranch two-man best ball tournament last weekend at the Meeker Golf Course.
Local golfers did well, as two teams finished with the best gross scores in their respective flights and four local teams finished with the best net scores in the four flights.
Bryce Ducey and Deloy Cook led from start to finish and won the second flight with a gross score of 143. The pair shot a 67 after the first 18 holes and were able to hold their lead after adding nine strokes to their score on the Sunday’s 18 holes. Meeker’s Pat Hughes and Bill de Vergie finished one shot behind Ducey and Deloy but took first place net honors with a net score of 121.
The championship flight was won by Rick Peterson and Roger Walters of Rifle who turned in a gross score of 129, three shots ahead of past champions Doug Choate and Joe Elliott of Battlement Mesa and Rifle.
Lex Collins and Erik Brown, who have been “in the money” each of the past 19 years they played together, didn’t break their streak as they finished with the best net score (119) in the championship flight.
Local golfers Randy Hall and Jeff Asslin led the third flight with a 71 after the first day and played one shot better Sunday to win their flight. Billy and Brandan Stewart finished with the best net score (117) in the third flight.
Harry Watt and Rod Crawford were one stroke behind John Swanson and Jim Fahenholtz, who won the fourth flight with a gross score of 152. Watt and Crawford took first place net honors with a net score of 113. Meeker’s Greg Ackerman and George Kuck finished with the second best net score in the fourth flight.
