Loose Ends: Fa-la-la-la-la

When does a community event become a tradition? Is it when it is declared an annual event after its success that first year or when it is held on the same date the next year and all the following years?
In the case of our local songsters, a few Meeker Community Choir members say they become repeat performers because everyone has so much fun putting it on they can’t imagine a year without it. The sharing of song is a unique kind of fellowship and whether the music is secular or sacred, the physical act of lifting one’s voice and joining a chorus of voices elevates the singers’ spirits as well.
Many people think that the words tradition and old-fashioned go together, but the Meeker Community Choir’s yearly efforts usually include a modern twist and new arrangements of old favorites as well. While caroling continues to be an ongoing activity for church groups or service organizations, the community choir membership allows those who do not attend a church to be part of celebration of the season as well.
Holiday traditions evoke the sounds and smells of the season and music brings out the memories of family and friends getting together. There are some years when Christmas is not something to look forward to for some reason, so the best way to get a lift for one’s spirits is to attend a performance of Christmas music.
The opportunity to do that is this weekend, when the Meeker Community Choir performs in the high school auditorium on Sunday, Dec. 11, at 3 p.m. in the Meeker High School auditorium.
