MEEKER I One graduated Meeker student has received a pair of nominations from U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton (R-Colo.-03) to attend either of two U.S. service academies next year.
On Monday, Tipton announced the names of 11 students from Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District who have received his nomination to the U.S. service academies.
John Henderson of Meeker is among those 11 students districtwide, and he was nominated to the United State’s Army’s West Point Academy and to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Henderson is a graduate of Meeker High School and is currently enrolled at Adams State University in Alamosa, Colo.
The students were selected based on meeting or exceeding the stringent requirements of the respective academy and of Tipton’s office. Students who applied were required to submit an essay, test scores, an application, letters of recommendation, transcripts and complete a panel interview in order to be considered.
“I want to congratulate all of the students who have worked so hard to earn a nomination to our nation’s service academies, and thank everyone who applied for their efforts,” Tipton said. “Not only have they put in the hours and dedication to excel academically and physically, these are young people of extraordinary moral character whose love for our country has led them to choose an honorable path of service to it.
“I’m confident that each of these exceptional nominees would make outstanding officers,” he said. “I encourage students in the district who are considering attending a U.S. Service Academy to reach out to our office for more information and to apply for a nomination.”
