Meeker baseball team opens with win

Hunter Garcia (above) pitched for the 11-12-year-old team against Craig and pitcher Chris Scherbarth (below) keeps his eye on the catchers mitt for the 8-10-year-old team. Meeker’s 8-10-year-old baseball and softball teams will play Parachute at Paintbrush Park tonight, starting at 6 p.m. Meeker’s 13-15 team will play in Eagle and the 11-12 team will play in New Castle Friday. Meeker’s girls’ fast pitch 13-15-year-old softball team will host New Castle, this Saturday at 11 a.m. And 1 p.m.

MEEKER I Baseball season has officially begun for the 8-10 year old boys. On May 25 the Meeker Rockies, as they refer to themselves, played their first game against the other 8-10 year old Meeker team at Paintbrush Park. Both teams showed great sportsmanship and played with enthusiasm.
The Meeker Rockies proved to their coaches, Dave and Sandy Scherbarth and assistant Dylan Mobley, the hard work and effort they showed in practice paid off.
In the first inning, Chris Scherbarth hit a home run, bringing two other runners across home with him. Both Cole Rogers and Austin Mortensen proved to have a “good eye,” earning them walks. In the second inning, Justin George got a hit to first base and ran the bases fast as Jake Shelton slammed the ball for a triple, bringing in two runners. Estevan Barreno proved to be a great base runner as his eye got him a walk. In the third inning, Elijah Deming and Daniel George both hit the ball hard for singles while Jose Garcia proved his batting ability by hitting a double. Jeffrey Cole-George watched the ball closely, earning him a walk.
Chris Scherbarth helped hold the runners with his hard fast pitches to his catcher, Deming. Shelton relieved Scherbarth at the end of the game and pitched well to hold the hitters. All players fielded the ball well. Kale Burke and cousin Pake Burke, were unable to attend this game as they were attending Destination Imagination Global Championships.
In this age group, the game ends after the fifth inning or an hour and a half, whichever comes first. So, at 7:30 p.m., the Meeker Rockies secured their first win.
In their second game on June 1, the Meeker Rockies played the Craig No. 2 team at home, making their coaches proud with an 8-0 win.
Mortensen and Shelton both hit singles with Garcia and Burke hitting hard for doubles. Again, Sherbarth hit a home run, one runner short of a grand slam. Deming wowed the crowd with his slide into home, hand sliding behind him hitting the base. George made a crucial play when he snagged a ball hit just over the third baseman, throwing it to his cut-off man, Burke, who stopped the runner at second. Barreno, Burke and Cole-George played well in the field, with the confidence no ball would get by them. Sherbarth pitched a fantastic game, striking out a majority of the hitters, with Rogers taking the mound in the fifth inning to hold the runners.
Coach Scherbarth, coach Sandy and Mobley have done a wonderful job coaching this team and preparing them with the necessary skills to succeed. The players have worked hard at practice, while still having fun, so that they can continue to play well on game day!
