MEEKER I The Meeker High School boys’ basketball team continued on a roll over the weekend as the Cowboys added two more wins to their unbeaten streak.
The Cowboy cagers beat Little Snake River of Baggs, Wyo., on Friday night and Plateau Valley on Saturday.
MHS coach Klark Kindler said about the team’s Friday night performance, “Snake River is always a great game for us to play. They have a winning tradition and they play hard all the time. It was a nice win for us.”
The Cowboys were led by Kash Atwood with 18 points followed by Raul Lopez with 11, Ty Dunham had eight and Joe Newman added six. The Cowboys also got quality minutes from freshman Logan Hughes.
The team once again showed outstanding defense as they held Little Snake River to just four points in the second period to go into the locker room leading 22-13.
Meeker came out with increased tempo, and scored 16 points in the third quarter, leading to the comfortable 51-29 victory.
On Saturday, Meeker faced Plateau Valley, and the combination of the Cowboys’ smothering defense and up-tempo offense was too much for Collbran.
Meeker jumped to a 15-11 first-quarter lead and then opened up a huge lead in the second quarter as they went into the half with a strong 39-17 lead.
Meeker was led by Kash Atwood with 12 points, all from behind the arc.
Ty Dunham added 11 to the cause, Joe Newman had 10, Jake Phelan had eight, Cade Rowlett had six and Raul, Frantz and Dinwiddie each added four points.
The balanced scoring made it very difficult for Plateau Valley. They bounced back a bit in the second half, but they only managed to close the margin to 18 as the final score was 60-42.
The Meeker boys will play Rangely tonight with the hope to continue their successful run.
