MEEKER I The Meeker High School boys’ basketball team continued their undefeated season with two league wins this past weekend.
The MHS Cowboys played Caprock Academy on Friday night and Hotchkiss at home Saturday.
Coach Klark Kindler said, “I liked the way we competed this week. We have been doing a good job on the defensive end. Both teams we played shot below 30 percent from the field.”
The Meeker defense made scoring almost impossible for Caprock Academy on Friday as Meeker jumped to a 13-2 first quarter lead.
The Cowboys got hot in the second quarter scoring 20 while holding Caprock to five points, building a 33-7 halftime lead.
Meeker played solid on both ends of the floor in the second half and finished the game 63-16.
The Meeker team came out with a big first quarter Saturday against a Hotchkiss team that was clearly ready to play.
Kindler said, “Hotchkiss played extremely hard and we were missing a couple players.”
Raul Lopez hit a three-pointer to spark a Cowboy run as they took a 17-11 first quarter lead.
In the second quarter, the Cowboy shooters went a little cold but they managed to retain a 30-21 lead at half.
The Hotchkiss defense was tough, and Kindler said, “Their length affected our shooting.”
The Cowboy’s tempo and outstanding defense maintained a solid third quarter as they outscored the Bulldogs 16-10.
In the fourth period, Meeker finished off the game 57-39.
The Cowboys will play Snake River this Friday night at home.
Kindler said, “Hopefully our kids can maintain their focus.”
The team looks very good as the regular season is well under way, and we are getting great contributions from several players.
