MEEKER I The undefeated Cowboys extended their record to a perfect 14-0 last weekend with victories over league foes Plateau Valley and Soroco.
Meeker picked up win No. 13 on Friday at home against Plateau Valley by a 71-45 score and then traveled to Oak Creek on Saturday to pick up its next victory 68-40.
Meeker started quickly Friday against their southern Cowboy counterparts as they opened up a quick 17-9 first-quarter lead on baskets from Mitch Jacob, Dakota Rowlett and Seth Boesch. Plateau Valley scored another nine points in the second, but Meeker kept up the pace and padded their lead going into halftime 33-19. Cole Steiner, Trevor Matrisciano and Colton Brown paced the ’Pokes in the second. Meeker continued the scoring in the third quarter behind Rowlett’s 11 points to extend the lead further 53-29. Plateau Valley tried to keep the scoring pace with Meeker in the fourth, but again it was the hometown Cowboys who finished on top 71-45. Rowlett led all scorers with 21, while the rest of the Cowboy team balanced the scoring parade amongst themselves.
A snowy trip to Oak Creek on Saturday did little to change the results for the Cowboys. Again, Meeker came out strong in the first quarter, gaining a 20-7 early lead. Solid defense paced the ’Pokes as they only allowed the hometown Rams eight more points in the second to lead 37-15 at the break. A lapse of offense hit Meeker in the third as the Cowboys could only muster nine points; however Soroco didn’t fare much better as it could only counter with seven points of its own. Meeker got their offense back on track in the fourth and finished going away with a 68-40 score. Jacob and Rowlett paced Meeker with 15 each followed by Tyrel Gerloff and Boesch with 12 apiece.
This week the Cowboys travel to Kremmling for a rematch against West Grand on Friday. Meeker soundly defeated the Mustangs in the Granby High Country Invitational in December by a 76-28 score. The Cowboys will return home on Saturday for an afternoon contest against De Beque.
