Meeker boys win two cage tests

MEEKER I The Meeker High School boys’ basketball team won two games last weekend, having defeated Vail Christian and Caprock Academy.

Coach Klark Kindler said, “It was nice for our kids to snap the losing skid. They have worked so hard in practice and have had great attitudes, and it was good to beat a good team.”
The post season is set regardless of the outcome of this weekend’s play, when Meeker will travel to Hayden on Monday to play a team they beat 57-12 when they played in January.
The winner of Monday night’s game will travel to Paonia on Tuesday for a third chance at the Eagles. The first time they met saw the Cowboys drop an 11-point game and the Cowboys will no doubt have an outstanding game plan in place for the matchup.
The winner of that game will then travel to Debeque to play in the semi-finals and finals of the District Tournament. All four teams that make it to Debeque qualify for the regional tournaments the following weekend. The games are for seeding purposes.
Meeker beat a solid Vail Christian team on Thursday night, 73-58, at home.
Kash Atwood shot very well from the three-point line and led all scorers with 20 points. The hustle and tempo of Logan Hughes kept Vail on their heels and Hughes finished with 17 points. Zack Dinwiddie added nine, Jerrick Garza and Eli Newman each had eight points, Valentine Rosas added six and Doak Mantle had five. The Cowboys combined their offensive efficiency with tenacious defense that proved to be too much for the Vail Christian team.
Meeker traveled to Grand Junction on Saturday and ran away from Caprock Academy, 65-17.
In the first quarter, Meeker jumped to a 17-10 lead. The Cowboys’ defense then held Caprock to seven total points in the next three quarters while scoring 48 points at the other end.
Ten Cowboy players scored for Meeker, led by Kash Atwood with 20, Jerrick Garza with 13, Eli Newman had 10, Logan Hughes and Zack Dinwiddie each added six points while Gavin Garr, Kale Burke, Stephen Walsh and Doak Mantle each had two points. Trapper Merrifield finished with one point.
The Cowboys will play Hotchkiss on Wednesday night and Plateau Valley on Friday. The games will not impact the overall standing for the league. The team looks to be ready for the post-season play coming off of two great wins.
