MEEKER I The Meeker High School boys’ basketball team stretched their season-opening winning streak to five games this year with a game on Dec. 18 on the road in Olathe.
Meeker went in against the 3A team and did not seem intimidated.
The Cowboys were led by sophomores Doak Mantle and Eli Newman, both scoring in double figures.
Mantle played like a true veteran varsity player scoring more than 20 points and adding tremendous defense, once again sparking the Cowboys.
Meeker trailed by a pair after the first quarter, but the Cowboys came back with a big second quarter, scoring 12 points while, more importantly, holding the Pirates to just four points.
At the intermission, all the right adjustments were made, and Meeker increased the tempo, scoring 20 points, holding Olathe to 13.
The final eight minutes found the Cowboys just taking care of business, winning the game 53-39. The team went into the break 4-0 and gained a great deal of confidence as they showed tremendous composure with young players. The boys no doubt are working extremely hard as they finish up their holiday break.
The MHS Cowboys willl next play Cedaredge on the road Jan. 8, when they will begin their league play.
Head coach Klark Kindler is pleased with the job his guys have done in the pre-season, and he said he looks forward to what the regular season brings.
The varsity is all freshmen and sophomores with only one senior, Kash Atwood, on the team.
