“The league had more than 90 games canceled this season because of rain,” Dodgers coach Mike Wille said. “Many practices were also cancelled and to not practice and still play at a high level is tough, real tough but our kids did fantastic.”
The 11-12-year-old team first played another Meeker team in the first round of the tournament and won 20-3, then played the Tigers from Craig in the championship game and shut them out, 17-0.
“They played well all season,” Coach Wille said.
Coach Wille was also proud of the reputation the Meeker team is building. After a recent tournament in Longmont, coaches and umpires commented on how the Dodgers were; “the most respectful team we have ever played or seen on the field.”
“Hearing a comment like that from coaches and umpires, means more to me than their wins and losses,” Coach Wille said.
The Little League season is now over but Coach Wille said five of his players will continue to practice after being selected to play on an all-star team, which will compete in Grand Junction in July, with an opportunity to move into the Little League World Series.
