Meeker Elementary School happenings

January was Fossils and Mammoths month at the library. Students brought in great fossils to display. They learned about mammoths and ice age creatures using the educational mammoth kits loaned to us by the mammoth site in Hot Springs, S.D. Colorado is full of mammoth sites. In 2010, near Snowmass, Colo., a bulldozer operator found huge mammoth bones near what was a watering hole during the ice age. The small lake was used by ancient elephants such as mammoths and mastodons. There have been 4,826 fossils found at the site in the 69-day dig period. Bones from 40 different mastodons of all ages were unearthed. The site would be a great place to visit this summer. To cap off library month we were thrilled to have a big green prehistoric visitor. He came to lunch and visited the classes.

February was Heart Health Month and many of our kids participated in the Jump Rope for Heart Program. We jumped rope all month during PE and learned how to have a healthy heart. As a school we raised more than $7,800 for the American Heart Association. Thanks to everyone who donated and to our kids for working so hard to raise money. Meeker Elementary School will receive $400 to buy new PE equipment and hopefully help save someone with a sick heart.

March 4 was the annual Read Across America and Dr. Seuss birthday party. Fourteen Meeker High School students from Kathleen Kelly’s class came to the elementary school and read Dr. Seuss books to the classes. In the evening we held a birthday party for Dr. Seuss. More than 150 people enjoyed the skit which featured some of the actors from the Suessical play that was performed last fall.

Anna Todd’s fourth- and fifth-grade marimba band set off the evening with a fantastic assortment of musical numbers. The band practices during the students’ lunch time. They have worked very hard and are certainly something to hear and see.
