MEEKER I Overall, it wasn’t the season the Lady Cowboys hoped for, but at the end, they were playing their best volleyball.
“The ending is always bittersweet when you’re not on top,” said coach Christy Atwood. “But, unlike a lot of teams, we finished our season with a win.”
Meeker hosted last weekend’s district tournament and opened with matches against rival Rangely and Paonia. Even though the Lady Cowboys lost both matches, they played well.
“Sometimes playing well and playing the best we have all season doesn’t get you a win,” Atwood said. “But we played our best matches (against Rangely and Paonia) and forced them to play their best as well.”
The Lady Cowboys finished out with a five-game win over Soroco.
“We didn’t play as well as we played against Rangely and Paonia, but we got a win against a team that beat us in three earlier in the season,” Atwood said. “It may not have been the prettiest, but it was a win, and for the seniors, that’s what I wanted.”
Seniors Devin Buckendorf, Stacey Fitzgibbons, Gabie Goettel, Morgan Neilson and Timbre Shriver played their final match last Friday.
“We knew we weren’t going to advance out of pool play, but we focused on playing our very best match we could play,” Atwood said. “I think it was a learning experience for everyone.”
