MEEKER I At this point in the season, getting better is always the goal.
That’s the case for Meeker’s volleyball team.
The defending Western Slope League champions lost to Vail Christian on Friday night, but there were bright spots.
“We are still seeing forward progress and that’s all we are looking for this early in the season,” said coach Christy Atwood.
Meeker lost in three games, 23-25, 15-25 and 21-25.
Even with the setback, the players’ attitudes remain positive.
Trying to find the right lineup, Atwood has experimented with moving players to different positions.
“We’ve changed our lineup from the beginning of the season,” Atwood said. “Changing strategies midstream is always difficult, but I have a great group of girls who are willing to take on the challenge. We’ll see what’s the best fit for all of the players.”
The Lady Cowboys will be busy this week.
On Friday, Meeker will play at Plateau Valley, and then on Saturday, the Lady Cowboys will be home against SoRoCo. Atwood said she wasn’t sure what to expect in either match.
“I did not see either of these teams in the preseason,” she said. “But in our league, it’s a crap shoot from one week to the next. Proof positive is SoRoCo, which beat Paonia and then turned around and lost to North Park.
“So, our focus is on making sure we’re completely executing our game plan,” Atwood said. “If we do all we can do, I hope it’s enough to get a win. If not, we’ll know what we need to work on going forward.”
Game times Saturday are at 1, 2 and 3 p.m.
