MEEKER I The Meeker fastpitch team (ages 13-15) took on the Eagle Valley Devils at Gypsum June 8. They say “hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard,” but our girls are both talented and hard working. At the first call to play ball the Meeker fastpitch team was on fire. They had a great first three innings but something changed when the fourth inning came around. The bases were still in the same places, as were the runners, but the girls’ perspective and motivation seemed to leave the field.
Third baseman Ohana Mataia commented, “Last Wednesday’s game wasn’t just the hardest game of the fastpitch season, it was also a great first game. We made some mental errors that night that we need to get rid of but other than that the game was exciting.”
Most teams say winning isn’t everything after they lose a game but our team already knew that. From this game they learned a bigger, more important lesson. They learned that your mind, your heart, your bat, all of them, must be in the same place at the same time when a softball game begins and that place is on the field.
We know that with this lesson under their belts our Meeker fastpitch team will go on to bigger and better things as the season rolls on.
