MEEKER I The Meeker girls’ basketball team won two more league games last week, pounding Caprock Academy 70-14, then beat Hotchkiss by 10 on their home court Saturday. Meeker, now 6-2, will host Little Snake River on Friday and Plateau Valley on Saturday.
“They are a new program and they are going to struggle,” Meeker head coach Greg Chintala said of Caprock Academy. “They don’t have enough experience yet.”
Coach Chintala said the starters played the first 10 minutes then the young kids got to play.
Seniors Sydney Hughes and Megan Parker still finished in double figures, scoring 20 and 11 respectively, while sophomore Reece Pertile, also a starter, scored 13. Hallie Ahrens and Anna Walsh each scored eight, while teammates; Jenna Walsh, Maggie Phelan, Julia Eskelson and Peyton Burke, all added a bucket.
Against Hotchkiss, the lady Cowboys led the entire game but at times, the game was a little closer than coach Chintala liked.
Chintala said. “We missed a lot of shots we shouldn’t have but we we are still young and a work in progress.”
Meeker’s defense kept the Bulldogs in check and coach Chintala was please with senior Jamie McLaughlin’s play.
“Jamie really geared it up on defense,” coach Chintala said.
McLaughlin also scored five points, Hughes led the team again with 20, Parker added 11, Pertile seven and Jenna Walsh made a free throw.
