MEEKER I The Meeker High School girls’ basketball team played three games last week and won all three, including two on the road.
The Cowboy girls will go on the road again, playing in Baggs, Wyo., tonight and in Collbran on Saturday.
“We played better this week than the week before and we did what we were supposed to do, win all three games,” head coach Greg Chintala said.
Meeker defeated Hayden 47-29 on Jan. 14 in Hayden, then pounded Caprock Academy 48-15 in front of a hometown crowd on Friday, then beat the Bulldogs 44-40 in Hotchkiss on Saturday.
“The wins came at a cost,” coach Chintala said of two injuries suffered by varsity players Julia Eskelson and Peyton Burke. Both will miss games this week for sure.
“The injury bug is biting us this year,” Chintala said.
Meeker had no problems with Hayden or Caprock Academy but Hotchkiss led after the first half.
“It was a good close game against Hotchkiss,” coach Chintala said. “We got into foul trouble and I was real pleased with our younger players coming in and holding their own and kept us in the game.”
Meeker trailed 24-19 at halftime and were down by two (34-32) going into the final quarter, where Meeker outscored Hotchkiss 12-6.
Megan Shelton led the team in scoring over the three games, making 26 points. Senior Jenna Walsh and junior Halle Ahrens, each scored 25 points in the three games while Burke added 21.
Meeker will play in Baggs tonight then play a league contest against the Plateau Valley Cowboys in Collbran on Saturday.
