Meeker girls win two league games

MEEKER I “We had a good weekend,” Meeker girls’ basketball coach Hallie Blunt said after her team won two league games last Friday and Saturday.
The Lady Cowboys defeated Plateau Valley 48-20 on their home court last Friday, before traveling to Oak Creek to defeat the Soroco Rams 57-44 the following day.
Meeker jumped ahead 9-2 after the first quarter and scored 10 in the second to lead 19-6 at halftime.
“The kids did a good job of staying after them with no real rhythm in the first half,” Blunt said. “We had better flow in the second half and played good defense.”
Blunt praised the defensive play of seniors Laura Glass and Timbre Shriver.
“Laura came in the Plateau Valley game and played physical defense for us and Timbre played good defensive games in both,” Blunt said of the seniors. “Timbre sets the intensity for the game.”
Meeker scored 12 in the third quarter and 17 in the final eights minutes to put the game away.
Senior Stacey Fitzgibbons was five-for-five from the free-throw line and led the team with 19 points. Becca de Vergie also finished in double figures with 13.
The game was a little closer against the Rams. but Meeker still led the entire game.
“We wanted to come out and play hard all four quarters,” Blunt said. “I thought we did and we had a lot of even scoring in the game.”
Meeker led 14-10 after the first quarter, 26-18 at halftime and took a 43-28 lead going into the final quarter.
“We were more consistent than we have been in the past,” Blunt said.
Fitzgibbons again led all scorers with 23 and Chintala scored 12, including two 3-pointers.
De Vergie finished in double figures with 10, while Sage Chapin, Shriver and McLaughlin each added four.
Meeker is now playing to host a first-round playoff game and will travel to Kremmling to take on Northwest League opponent, the West Grand Mustangs Friday and will host the De Beque Dragons Saturday afternoon.
