Meeker goes 1-3 in Glenwood Springs tourney; hosts Moffat

MEEKER — “We hung in there,” Meeker High School volleyball coach Christy Atwood said of her team’s play in the season opening tournament in Glenwood Springs. Meeker lost three matches to larger schools but did beat the other 2A school they played.
“It was a great start,” Atwood said.
Meeker played host 4A Glenwood Springs in the first match of pool play and started out well, winning the first game but then lost the next two and the match, setting up a match with 5A Grand Junction Central.
“We played Central Saturday morning and I don’t think everyone was awake because we didn’t compete like I know we can,” Atwood said.
Meeker only win came against 2A Nucla in two games but according to Atwood, it wasn’t easy.
“Saturday morning was hard for us,” Atwood said.
After pool play, Meeker was cross-bracketed against Steamboat Springs. The lady Cowboys didn’t win a game but they were in each one until the end, losing the first game 24-26 and the second 23-25.
“We battled every game and were right there,” Atwood said. “We were able to hang with them, it was a good measuring stick. We took nine players, everyone played every match and everyone contributed.”
Meeker will play in Aspen today and host Moffat County in the first home match of the season tonight.
“We got to see Aspen play a match in
the tournament and I believe we should
be able to compete and we hope to give Moffat County a run for their money,” Atwood said.
Meeker’s sub-varsity teams hosted Rangely last Saturday and according to Atwood, played well.
“We split them into three teams so everyone could get more touches,” Atwood said.
