Meeker Golf Course a busy place, to host RBC Cup this weekend

Meeker’s Erik Brown makes contact out of the sand trap on the No. 9 hole at Meeker Golf Course while playing in the annual two-man best-ball tournament, where he teamed up with Lex Collins. Brown and Collins have partnered for years for this tournament and usually finish in the money—but not this year. Jason Back (pictured to Brown’s right) and his dad, George, shot two-under-par 66’s both days and finished with the best net score in the championship flight. The Meeker Golf Course will host the annual Rio Blanco County Cup this weekend.

MEEKER I White River Electric Association’s annual golf tournament filled the Meeker Golf Course on Friday, followed by the annual two-day, two-man best-ball tournament, and this weekend Meeker will host the annual Rio Blanco County Cup, which is currently on display in Rangely.

The WREA tournament drew a field of 68 for the four-person scramble, and many stayed over for the two-man best-ball tournament, which featured 21 teams playing in two flights.
Perennial champions Doug Choate and Joe Elliot won the championship flight of the two-man best ball tournament, with a gross score of 131. Local golfer George Back teamed up with his son, Jason, and the two pushed the champions until the end, taking first place net honors, after finishing one shot behind the champions.
Patrick Burwell and Cole Mannupella of Rifle were tied with Choate and Elliot after the first day of play, and the Backs were one shot back.
Burwell and Mannupella shot a 71 on the second day to finish with the second-best gross while local brothers Andy and Pat Coryell finished with the second best net score (127) in the championship flight.
Mitch Carter and Tim Roe finished with the best gross score (144) in the second flight, giving Meeker locals Donny McPherson and Irv Griffin second place, one shot behind the champions.
Jeff Austin and Nick Rocco had the best net score (120), four shots ahead of second-place Wendell Good and Steve Stanek.
The Meeker Golf Course will host the 2016 Rio Blanco County Cup, a match-play format between golfers from Meeker and Rangely’s Cedar Ridges Golf Course, to determine which clubhouse gets to display the traveling trophy for the next year.
