MEEKER I “It was the biggest couples tournament we have had in five or six years,” Meeker Golf Course manager Scott Bowman said about the annual tournament. “We had a great turnout, especially from out-of-town folks.”
More than 30 couples played two days, 18 holes per day, divided into two different flights, and local couples found the competition to be extremely tough.
Doug and Britt Choate of Battlement Mesa won the championship flight with a 12-under-par 124, shooting 62 both days.
Former Meeker resident Jason Back and his wife, Amanda, finished with the second-best gross score, and his parents, George and Peggy, finished with the second best net score (116) in the championship flight.
Rifle’s Elly and Roger Walters were only three shots behind the champions, but they took first-place honors with the best net score (113) in the first flight.
It was another Battlement Mesa couple, Tom and Boni Rust, who won the second flight, with a gross score of 154. Charles Debendictus and Sandra Council of Denver finished with the second-best gross score, two shots behind the champions. Rangely’s Rick and Ann Brady, who recently won the Rangely Couples Golf Tournament on their home course, finished third in the second flight in Meeker, with a gross score of 160.
The tournament had two ties in the second flight, where Meeker’s Irene Kilbane and Scott Bowman tied with Jim and Evelyn Woosley of Moab, Utah, for the best net score (112). Former Meeker residents, Tom and Sherri Rubin, tied with Mike and Tricha Blackman of Thayne, Wyo., for the third-best net score.
The annual Cowboy Kickoff Classic will be held Saturday to benefit the Meeker High School football program.
