MEEKER I Eight Meeker High School students and one teacher, Bob Dorsett, are participating in a nine-day field science project studying marine life in Baja California Sur. The Island Ecology Program, organized by Ecology Project International (www.ecologyproject.org), is located at the Sea of Cortez’ Espiritu Santo Island.
The Meeker students will join local researchers and EPI program educators in studies about marine ecosystems and the Sea of Cortez — a protected area that hosts 39 percent of the world’s marine mammal species and was recently declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Students will collect data on marine species while snorkeling offshore of Espiritu Santo Island. They will also meet local Mexico students during an intercultural exchange day in addition to visiting the Sierra de la Laguna biosphere reserve on the southern end of the Baja peninsula.
