MEEKER I After a crushing defeat to the Paonia Eagles in the regular season finale, the Meeker girls’ basketball team finished as the No. 4 seed and will host a district playoff game this Saturday against Soroco.
“It’s pretty obvious we have to work on our press break,” was the only comment head coach Hallie Blunt wanted to make on the 21-58 loss. “We are looking forward to our home game Saturday.”
The Eagles applied the pressure early and took an eight-point lead after the first quarter and scored 19 in the second to lead 31-10 at halftime. Meeker only scored two points in the third quarter, while allowing 17.
“The thing I like most about these girls is they work hard and they came to practice tonight ready to fix it,‚“ Blunt said after Monday‚‘s practice. “They know if they work hard and play their game, they can be successful. They have an ability to find a way to win.”
Meeker defeated Soroco 57-44 in league play and Blunt is hoping for the same outcome Saturday.
“We’ll get in a good week of practice and try to put 32 minutes together,” Blunt said. “If we have less than 20 turnovers and open up our post game, we will be successful.”
The Meeker boys will also host a playoff game, following the girls’ game, which starts at 1 p.m.
“Hosting both girls’ and boys’ district games is a great atmosphere for our kids,” Blunt said. “Having a full gym is a great experience for them. The louder it gets, the better.”
