MEEKER — The greeting card. After rummaging through a 20-year-old box of correspondence, filled with greeting cards and handwritten letters, a young family member piped up with, “This was all before e-mail, wasn’t it?” No wonder the post office has to keep raising the price of stamps and a single greeting card now costs between $3 and $5 in most places. Today’s kids probably don’t even have handwritten notes to pass in school, they just “text” each other via cell phone.
According to wikipedia.com, “The custom of sending greeting cards can be traced back to the ancient Chinese, who exchanged messages of good will to celebrate the New Year, and to the early Egyptians, who conveyed their greetings on papyrus scrolls. By the early 1400s, handmade paper greeting cards were being exchanged in Europe. The Germans are known to have printed New Year’s greetings from woodcuts as early as 1400, and handmade paper Valentines were being exchanged in various parts of Europe in the early to mid-1400s.”
