Happy New Year! Here at the Herald Times we hope you all had a peaceful and pleasant Christmas celebration and are ready to leap into 2012 filled with hope and a sense of optimism. Maybe if we all ignore the whole idea of new year’s resolutions we’ll be able to accomplish that!
New year celebrations worldwide are often more demonstrative than what we do around here. Forget Snooki and the Times Square ball drop, New Year’s customs in other places include bonfires, fireworks, grape-eating (one grape for every chime of the clock at midnight representing 12 wishes), effigy burning, political satire, and of course, lots of “good luck” food, from black-eyed peas and collard greens to codfish to sauerkraut. And according to Scottish tradition, where the new year is celebrated as Hogmanay, the first person to enter your home after the New Year indicates what kind of year you’ll have, you might want to lock your doors and peek out the window before answering the bell on Jan. 1.
