The BLM announced the names of three companies which get to apply in a second round of oil shale leases. One surprise, Natural Soda Inc., which hopes to use it’s drilling experience in the Piceance Basin to develop a new method of extracting oil shale.
And while energy companies turn in drilling applications ever closer to the 1973 site of an underground nuclear test in the Piceance Basin, the state has yet to develop standards for drilling in areas that could potentially release radioactive material. Near a similar site in Rulison, companies have to drill test wells. But the Project Rio Blanco site is different because no one lives there to be exposed to radioactive material, if it were released. That comment from the executive director of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources. How close do you have to live to radioactive material for it to be considered a problem?
