MEEKER — Armed Forces Day is Saturday, May 17. In case you are unfamiliar with this national holiday, it’s a day set aside to honor all the branches of the U.S. military: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. Armed Forces Day was established in 1949.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday to come together and thank members of our military for their service to our country. In a time of war, Armed Forces Day is more important than ever. There are a number of opportunities circulating around town for the benefit of our troops abroad. Armed Forces Day is a good time to participate!
This week is also National Bike Week and National Police Week.
A reader shared a link to a great news story about an “outstanding” example of sportsmanship at a college softball game in Oregon. When one of the senior players hit her first home run, then collapsed on first base with a knee injury, the opposing team’s first baseman and shortstop picked her up and carried her from base to base so the hit would count as a three-run homer. Their selfless action contributed to their own team’s elimination from the playoffs. See the whole inspiring story at nbcsports.msnbc.com /id /24392612/from/ET/.
