MEEKER — The younger Mustangs took the field at Coal Ridge High School and made their mark, and New Castle didn’t know what hit them.
The first play of the game Sheridan Harvey ran the ball for a touchdown with two more later in the game. The young Mustangs clearly dominated the game with outstanding plays by Tyler Ilgen, Chase Rule, Trapper Merrifield, Noah Mayerle and Bruce Kelley on defense.
By halftime the Mustangs were up 19-0.
Jerrick Garza, playing quarterback for the first time this season, came in and dazzled the crowd with a pass to Doak Mantle for Meeker’s last touchdown of the game. The final score was 25-0. This group of boys are really starting to play as a team and understanding the game, Dan Ilgen said.
The older Mustangs, with a week off, started a little sluggish, but held the much larger New Castle team from scoring.
This game was a game of heart and will to win.
The undersized Mustang defense repeatedly tormented New Castle’s offense with outstanding plays by Raul Lopez, Jake Phelan, Austin Bradford, Kash Atwood, Ruger Lewis and Dillon Frantz.
The game went into overtime at 0-0.
The Mustangs on the 20-yard line did a quarterback sneak and T.J. Shelton ran to the left and scored, to give the Mustangs padding Shelton passed to Sam Nieslanik for the extra two points, 8-0. New Castle had their chance and on the first snap Meeker recovered the fumble and won the game.
