MEEKER — Eight young Cowboys from Meeker won the Rangely Youth Wrestling tournament last Saturday and 15 others placed in the top four. After a one-year hiatus, Meeker will again host the Casey Turner Memorial tournament, this Saturday, featuring more than 250 K-6 wrestlers from the Western Slope and eastern Utah.
After qualifying for the middle school state tournament, yet unable to make it to Denver because of the weather, Barone Middle School sixth-grader Colt Lewis entered and won the Rangely tournament. Meeker’s Sheridan Harvey won his second tournament in a row, as did the Shelton brothers Jake and TJ. Five-year-old Colton Wille won three matches and the title in his bracket, as did Doak Mantle, Casey Turner and Jake Rowland. Rowland was also given the sportsman award in the 12-and-under division by the league coaches.
Cooper Main, Kelton Turner, Tannen Kennedy, Jacob Pelloni and Ruger Lewis were all runner-ups. Anthony Holland-Gonzales, Cody Nielsen, Joshua Cochran, Matt Niemietz and Aaron Cochran, who also qualified for the middle school state tournament, all finished as consolation champions.
Jeffery Cole, Tevin Pelloni, James Amick, Austin Russell and Dillon Frantz all finished fourth. Several other wrestlers competed in Rangely, most winning at least one match but not placing were; Liam and Elijah Deming, Braydon Garcia, Ty and Kylloe Goedert, Jesus Holland-Gonzales, Kale Burke, Kascia Cochran, Logan Hughes, Logan Rudkin, Anna Castle, Garrett and Matt Frantz and Eli Newman.
The morning session (K-2) of the Casey Turner Memorial tournament will begin at 9 a.m., with the afternoon session scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Come and support Meeker’s future high school wrestlers.
