Meeker school board considers furniture for elementary school

MEEKER I While occupancy of the new elementary school is still a long ways off, plans are under way on how to furnish the building, scheduled to be completed in June 2010.
At a July 14 meeting, a representative of Contrax Furnishings made a presentation to the school board. Contrax Furnishings, based in Gainesville, Fla., specializes in educational furnishings and equipment. The board determined that Doug Pfau, the new superintendent, and Jason Hightower, elementary school principal, should meet with Contrax as well as other companies to determine the best option for the district.
In other business, several positions were approved: Ivy Abshire, middle school physical education; Anna Todd, elementary school music; Amy Chinn, elementary and middle school counselor; Tammy Jordan, Title I paraprofessional; and Maria Haggart, English language learner aide. Pfau also informed the board of Megan Kidwell’s resignation as kindergarten teacher. Board member Jerry Oldland said the board would like to “thank her for her service to the district and wish her the best.”
Jim Hanks, middle school principal, announced he will submit a grant application to the Morgridge Family Foundation in Denver. The grant is technology driven and could provide interactive Smart Boards for the district. “We’ll know by the end of the month,” Hanks said.
Other items included a discussion of best practices for board members. Pfau will distribute material at each meeting to ensure he and the board are on the same page regarding general processes. “I just try to make sure that everybody is well trained … and having a conversation about what your expectations are and what best practice is,” Pfau said.
The board also discussed a possible information session prior to the next election for individuals interested in running for a board position.
