MEEKER I The Meeker Board of Education gave its approval Tuesday night to Hellas Construction Inc. of Austin, Texas, as general contractor for the district’s track and field project.
A pre-construction meeting was held Tuesday to discuss the pros and cons of going ahead with the project in 2015 as planned.
After much discussion with Hellas project manager Mike Walker, and SGM project engineer Jeff Simonson, the consensus was to delay construction until spring of 2016.
All agreed it was better to do the project right than risk its integrity by rushing.
Hellas estimates the project will take 100 to 120 days after allowing for probable weather delays. Postponing until 2016 ensures the football field sod will be fully established before use and the total project will be worthy of its investment.
Delaying the project will also allow an in-depth review of the bid components. This may effect savings with which to expand the project. Needed additional work on the shot put and discus fields were cited as examples.
Hellas will provide all construction services except the asphalt paving. The firm will also install its own synthetic running surface on the track. It specializes in manufacturing sport surfaces and has put in many thousands of fields, tracks and courts across the country.
