Meeker tracksters have busy week

According to Meeker High School track coach John Strate, Jacob Henderson continues to improve his time in the 110-meter hurdles and impressed him after clearing 5-6 in the high jump. “Jake’s high jump was impressive considering it was his first time competing in the event,” Strate said. The Cowboys will compete in Rangely on Saturday.

MEEKER I The Meeker High School Cowboys boys’ and girls’ track teams faced tough competition on Friday at the Coal Ridge Invitational meet, then improved many of their performances the next day in Glenwood Springs.

The Cowboys will run, jump, throw and put in Rangely on Saturday.
“The highlight performances for the day included Jacob Henderson in the 110-meter hurdles posting a season best time of 16.92 and his jump of 5-6 in the high jump,” head coach John Strate said of Friday’s track meet.
“Jake’s high jump was impressive considering it was his first time competing in the event,” he said.
Coach Strate said Layton Bair broke the 100-foot mark in the discus for the first time.
“We have a group of young throwers who are really starting to improve,” he said.
Strate also said that senior Sydney Hughes “saw her first competition of the season this weekend, competing in the triple jump, the 100-meter hurdles and the 100- and 200-meter dashes.”
“Both the boys’ and the girls’ teams had great performances, including many personal bests,” Strate said of the meet in Glenwood Springs on Saturday.
“Jacob (Henderson) was again able to improve his time in the 110-meter hurdles and Jake Phelan ran a personal best (12.1) in the 100-meter dash.
According to Strate, junior Noah Overton was “able to hit a new personal best in the shot put, with a toss of 40-2 1/2, which placed him sixth while Marshal Pool finished sixth in the 3,200-meter run.
“Warm weather and less wind led to numerous personal bests for many on the boys’ team,” Strate said.
Maggie Phelan placed fourth in the triple jump with a hop, skip and jump of 31-2 and she was also on the 4×400-meter relay with Linda Olivas, Avery Watt and Madi Russell, who combined for a fourth-place finish.
Olivas, Russell, Hughes and Halle Ahrens finished second in the 4×100-meter relay, while the 4×200 relay team with Russell, Olivas, Ahrens and Peyton Burke placed third.
“Halle is coming back from injury and looking better every day,” Strate said.
The Cowboys will compete in Rangely on Saturday.
