MEEKER I It is the Meeker Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5843 Ladies Auxiliary, not the American Legion as incorrectly published in last week’s Herald Times, that presents our nation’s colors at home sporting events.
Current president Vicki Crawford said the Meeker VFW Post 5843 Ladies Auxiliary has been active since 1947 and they host a meeting the second Thursday of every month at the Kilowatt Korner, welcoming anyone interested in joining the organization.
Crawford said Ladies Auxiliary VFW members are wives, widows, mothers, foster moms or stepmothers (who have performed the duties of a parent), grandmothers, daughters, foster and stepdaughters (who attained that status prior to the age of 16 and for whom the duties of parent were performed), sisters, half-sisters, foster and stepsisters (who attained that status prior to the age of 16).
Crawford said they have 37 members, with 15 living in Meeker and active in the auxiliary.
The Meeker VFW Post 5843 Ladies Auxiliary is very active in the community volunteering at the Walbridge Wing, the Meeker School District, raising money for scholarships and donating money to those in need.
“We are chauffeurs, cooks, caregivers, barbers and beauticians,” Crawford said. “We present the colors at various sporting and community events, place flags on the graves of veterans and auxiliary members on Memorial Day and many other things.”
According to Crawford, persons who are eligible for membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States must be citizens of the United States and at least 16 years old, have served or are serving in a foreign war, have received an honorable discharge and have earned a recognized campaign medal or badge.
Women eligible for membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States shall be eligible for dual membership in the Ladies Auxiliary.
Crawford is the president, Laura Blazon is the senior vice president, Ranae Blazon the junior vice president and Kim Gould is the treasurer.
