MEEKER I The Meeker High School girls’ volleyball team had an outstanding weekend, traveling to Grand Junction on Friday to beat Caprock Academy, and winning a huge match in Kremmling on Saturday.
The tough Cowboy team defeated Caprock in three straight games, 25-10, 25-18 and 25-15.
Coach Janae Stanworth said, “We didn’t play to our full potential on Friday” but the team certainly played well enough to win, as the Cowgirls did not get thrown off by the inconsistent play of their opponents.
The team gained confidence from the win and surprised Kremmling (West Grand), beating them in five games on Saturday.
The first game went to West Grand, 24-22, but Meeker took control in the next two games winning game two by 25-20 and game three by a 25-23 score.
“West Grand is a good team. The girls really came together as a team and played well,” Stanworth said.
Kremmling won game four with a 25-18 edge to force a game five.
It took extra points to win, but the hard work of the lady Cowboys paid off, finishing the fifth game by a 16-14 margin.
One very important factor in this win was the balanced offense as Halle Ahrens and Reese Pertile each posted 10 kills, Jenna Walsh had eight and Krissie Luce added five. Krissie Luce also had three service aces while Peyton Burke had two more.
LoriAnn Klingelsmith and Kassie Luce led in serve receive passes and digs and the nearly 100 percent in kills was assisted by the outstanding junior setter Maggie Phelan.
“I am so excited to see where they will go from here. This is only the beginning,” Stanworth added.
This was a great league win for Meeker and it provides momentum going into the bulk of the regular season.
The MHS girls will travel to Rangely on Friday and play host to Hotchkiss at home on Saturday.
