MEEKER I The Meeker High School girls’ volleyball team continued its winning streak over the weekend, beating Caprock and Plateau Valley.
The Cowboy girls dominated Caprock in three games, 25-5, 25-12 and 25-12 Friday before facing Plateau Valley Saturday, beating them in four games.
The team was led in kills by Paige Jones and Sydney Hughes with 14 each and that including the great defense the opponents had. Halle Ahrens added 10 kills and Reagan Pearce had six.
Coach Janae Stansworth said, “Plateau Valley doesn’t let much of anything hit the ground, and we had to really work hard to not make mistakes, and then to capitalize on theirs.”
The team showed great composure again after losing the first game, but they regrouped to beat the opposing Cowboys, 25-17, 25-20 and taking control of game four by a 25-11 score.
The team looked very seasoned for mid-season play, and first-year coach Stansworth has a lot to be excited about as the team is in the running for the league championship.
The team will be tested this weekend as they play Rangley tonight in Rangely and then a big Paonia game at home on Friday night.
Stansworth said, “They are a tough team and we have to be on top of our game.”
The MHS girls are confident going into the weekend as they played a great third game against the eagles in their last outing in Paonia.
Meeker will really test team skills as they host the Cedaredge Bruins on Saturday. The team has the ability and momentum to get big wins this weekend and clearly home town support can make the difference.
“The girls are working hard this week to come out and win games this weekend,” Stansworth said. “The team looks to be as good a team as Meeker has put on the floor in the past years and the new coach seems to providing great skills and motivation to find ways to win. Confidence will be the key as the team faces great opponents this week.”
