Meeker wins baseball tourney

MEEKER — Summer baseball came to an end last week, with Meeker hosting and winning the 11-12-year-old bracket. Other tournaments were held around the region but local teams did not fare as well.
Meeker’s team entered the tournament with 7-2 record and received a first round bye. Rangely’s team also received a first round bye and came from behind to beat Rifle 11-10 to advance to the semifinals. Meeker pounded Parachute 18-2 in its first actual tournament game, matching them against Rangely in the semifinal game of the double elimination tournament.
Meeker took a 4-0 lead after the first inning and added 12 more in the second to take a 16-0 lead. Rangely came back with a big inning in the bottom of the fourth, scoring 13 runs but ran out of time and lost 13-16.
Rangely got its bats working again against Parachute, beating them 23-12 to advance to the championship game against Meeker.
In the championship game, Meeker took a 2-0 lead early and then broke the game open in the third inning to go undefeated in the tournament and win the championship.
Meeker’s 15-and-under girls fast pitch softball team ended its season undefeated in league play, winning a doubleheader against New Castle last week in Silt.
“They are an amazing team,” coach Janae Shelton said. Shelton said her team won the first game by 24 runs and the second game was called, with Meeker ahead by 18.
Meeker’s 8-10 boys won one game and lost two in Rifle and Meeker’s 11-12 girls fast pitch team were eliminated from their tournament after two games.
