MEEKER I The Meeker High School wrestling team opened its season in Grand Junction, wrestling in the Colorado Mesa University Duals, where the squad won three of the five duals wrestled.
“It was a good competitive level for us,” head coach J.C. Watt said. “All of the duals were close and all of our kids got some good competition.”
Final results were not available, but Meeker defeated Coal Ridge, Olathe and Montrose and lost to Grand Junction Central and Montezuma-Cortez.
“We are not where we need to be with our conditioning, but it is a long season and there is time to get into shape,” Watt said.
According to Watt, only senior Tristin Pelloni won all of his matches.
“Not all of the wrestlers are down to the weights they are going to wrestle, and we looked a bit small compared to some,” coach Watt said. “We identified some of the things we need to work on though.”
Meeker filled 12 of 14 weight classes in Grand Junction and sent seven wrestlers to Olathe for the junior tournament, where four of them wrestled in the finals.
Jacob Henderson wrestled Dillon Frantz in the championship match and Caleb Bradford and Brett McGruder also met each other in the finals of their bracket, wrestling what Watt described as “epic” matches.
The Cowboys will wrestle in the Delta Invitational tournament on Saturday.
