MEEKER I All American Livestock Judging Team awards were announced during the awards breakfast at the National Collegiate Livestock Judging Contest in Louisville, Ky., on Tuesday, and Meeker can boast of a student on that exclusive team.
The contest was held in conjunction with the 40th North American International Livestock Exposition, which took place Nov. 9-22 in Louisville. A total of 42 students were nominated for the honor in 2013, and candidates were narrowed to the top 10 individuals.
Honorees had a GPA of 3.88. Four of the 10 All Americans announced in Louisville are a part of the 2013 Oklahoma State University Livestock Judging Team, and so is Meeker resident Morgan Neilson, the daughter of Paul and Renea Neilson of Meeker.
The All American Team program is designed to recognize students who have made a personal commitment to livestock judging and who have also excelled in academics, university and industry activities as well as community service.
Morgan Neilson has served as a College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources ambassador and student academic mentor, president of the Meat Science Association and officer for the Block and Bridle Club.
She worked as an intern for the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Agriculture, a sales and marketing intern for Cargill and communications intern for The Show Text.
She is a meat science research assistant at OSU. Her community service includes volunteering at 4-H and FFA judging contests in Oklahoma and Colorado, Adopt-A-Highway and she was team captain for her Relay for Life team.
She has also been inducted as an American Meat Science Association All-American after competing on the Oklahoma State University meat judging team. Morgan would like to attend law school to become an agricultural and water rights attorney.
