MEEKER I After a few open gym practices, several Meeker High School volleyball players formed two teams and traveled to Parachute to play several matches in preparation of the upcoming season, which head coach Janae Stanworth looks forward to.
“We are excited for the season to start,” said coach Stanworth, who will start her third year as head coach of her high school alma mater. “We just got back into the gym on the first of July and then went to Grand Valley last week.”
Coach Stanworth said 15 players were divided into two teams, then each played 12 matches and both teams finished fourth in their pools.
Meeker placed behind 5A Grand Junction, 4A Palmer Ridge, perinnial 1A state contender Fleming and ahead of 5A Fruita.
“Everyone played well,” coach Stanworth said. “We stayed in the gym Friday night and got in some good team bonding.”
“Last year was a building year for us and we didn’t lose anyone from that team,” coach Stanworth said. “We could tell right away in open gym, the girls have all grown, they are more experienced and they are playing with more confidence, so we can build on that.”
Bailey Atwood and Julie Bowman will assist Stanworth with the coaching duties this season.
