MEEKER I The Meeker High School volleyball team came away with two more wins over the weekend, improving its overall record to 8-2.

First-year head coach Janae Stansworth said, “I believe we are improving each and every day.”
The team looked very strong Friday night against Rangely. The win was sparked by excellent play at the net by Megan Parker, who finished with five solo blocks and several kills. Meeker won the first game 25-17.
The second game found both teams hitting hard with Cowboy Brittany Smith showing outstanding defense, getting in the double figures in digs and keeping plays alive. Meeker won that game 25-19.
The deciding win came by a narrow 25-22 margin.
Sydney Hughes led the team in kills with 12, followed by Reagan Pearce, Megan Parker, Paige Jones and Halle Ahrens each adding big hits for the team.
Stansworth said, “Every player did their job, and they really played as a team.”
Meeker took its momentum on the road Saturday to play Hotchkiss.
The girls came out strong, winning game one by a 25-15 margin. Sydney Hughes once again led the team in kills with 13, followed by Pearce and Jones with six each.
The team let up a bit in game two, falling to a 25-10 defeat, but showed great composure, coming back with a decisive 25-17 victory in game three.
The team has been led not only in assists but in overall consistency by young setter Maggie Phelan. Phelan has not missed a serve all year and had more than 40 assists during the weekend.
Stansworth said, “We started well Saturday, but let down in the second game. The team figured out how to win.”
The Cowboy girls have found ways to win important games this season and continue to get better.
The team will be on the road this weekend, playing Caprock Academy on Friday and Plateau Valley on Saturday. Stansworth said, “We have to block well as Plateau Valley has a big middle hitter, and we need to be on our toes, ready for anything with both teams.”
The girls are playing excellent team volleyball and their first year coach is excited about how hard they are working and where they want to be at the end of the season.
