Editor’s Note: Meeker High School’s Sage Chapin and Elissa McLaughlin, who will be juniors, won a national competition with their presentation on entrepreneurship at an FCCLA event in Nashville, Tenn. They filed this report.

STAR events
STAR Events stand for Students Taking Action with Recognition. STAR Events are competitive events in which members are recognized for proficiency and achievement in chapter and individual projects, leadership skills, and career preparation. STAR Events offer individual skill development and application of learning There are three levels of recognition that you can receive: Bronze, Silver and Gold. The recognition is based on a point system.
Our STAR event: Entrepreneurship
Event that recognizes participants who develop a plan for a small business using family and consumer sciences skills and sound business practices. The business must relate to an area of family and consumer sciences education or related occupations. We made a full and detailed business plan for event coordination and party rental services.
State competition
We presented to a panel of judges who scored our project and presentation on a rubric. We were ranked in the Gold Level and had the highest score, which earned us the privilege of going to the National Competition in Nashville, Tenn.
Nationals
Nationals were held in Nashville, Tenn. We presented to another panel of judges who scored our project and presentation on another rubric. We had the highest scores out of all the participants and won a scholarship to Kendall College in Chicago. We were also ranked in the Gold Level. There were 30-40 participating teams in the entrepreneurship event.
