MEEKER I The lady Cowboy basketball team will open the 2015 season on its home court tonight when they tipoff at 7:30 in the first round of the White River Electric Cowboy Shootout tournament.
Meeker finished second in the regional tournament last year, with an 11-5 record, one win away from qualifying for the 1A Colorado State Basketball Championships.
“We are young but we are going to be all right,” Meeker girls’ head coach Greg Chintala said.
Jenna Walsh will be the lone senior for the lady Cowboys this year and she will be backed by juniors who also have varsity experience, including Reese Pertile, Halle Ahrens, Maggie Phelan and Peyton Burke.
“We have 24 out and a few of our young kids are pretty competitive, which makes practice good for sure,” coach Chintala said.
Meeker traveled to Coal Ridge on Monday to scrimmage the Titans and coach Chintala said he was “pleased” with what he saw.
“It’s definitely going to be a team thing this year,” coach Chintala said. “Throughout the season, I believe we will have seven or eight different leading scorers because it is going to need to come from every direction. I’m looking forward to the season.”
