MHS boys’ basketball team stays busy off-season

MEEKER I The Meeker High School boys’ basketball team has been very busy this summer with off-season camps and tournaments.
The team traveled to Alamosa last week for the Adams State College Camp where they were up against 16 varsity teams from Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado. Meeker gained tremendous experience in just a short time, playing 11 games and winning six, putting them sixth overall in a very competitive field.
Raul Lopez, Jake Phelan, Jeremy Musgrave, Ty Dunham, Kash Atwood, Cade Rowlett, Tom Chitwood, Tony Collins and Jake Smith participated in the camp, where they not only played games but were shown college level shooting drills they participated in and can continue to use.
Team members began their tournament play Thursday evening, beating Springfield and Vista Ridge. Friday was a full day of basketball, with four games, beginning with Santa Fe Prep, N.M., followed by Sanford and Sargent, Colo. They finished the day with a win, beating Bushland, Texas.
On Saturday, the team began its day by beating league team West Grand and two other Colorado teams — MaClave and Pueblo Centennial. Meeker came up short against Roosevelt, but finished Saturday with a 3-1 record, putting them in the top division for the bracketed tournament portion of the camp.
This matched the Cowboys against a tough Bradshaw, Ariz., team for the single-elimination format. The team played well but fell short, losing in the last second, when a Bradshaw player tipped in a shot.
Team members came away with 11 more games under their belt and saw new competition while learning drills and skills that will carry over into the future.
