MEEKER I Meeker’s volleyball team beat a strong Grand Valley team over the weekend but fell to Rangely and West Grand leaving the lady Cowboys fourth in the league.
The team looked very strong Thursday night against the larger Cardinals, beating them in three games, 25-20, 26-24, and 25-23. Meeker carried the momentum from Thursday night into their first game against Rangely coming out strong with a 25-20 win. They played great defense and “didn’t give up runs that allowed them to gain momentum,” Atwood said of the first game.
The second game started with the lady Cowboys on the attack but great digs from Brittany Babineaux started the comeback for the Panthers. Quincey Thacker came on strong in game two and was a problem for the Meeker defense all night. Meeker battled in the next three matches but “missed serves at critical momentum times killed us,” Atwood said. Meeker could not regain control of the tempo and fell to the Panthers in four games.
Meeker made the long trip to Kremmling to conclude their regular season and once again could not gain the momentum. They would battle and play great defense and then struggle from the serving line making it difficult to put a run together. The lady Cowboys forced extra points in the first set, losing 27-25, and couldn’t get the match back, losing in three.
Despite the two losses, Meeker finished their regular season well over 500 with an overall record of 13-6 and a league record of 7-3. They go into the district tournament seeded number four. The top three teams will advance from this district to the regional playoffs the following weekend. In this weekend’s district tournament Meeker will play West Grand at 10:30 a.m., Soroco at 1:30 p.m. and Paonia at 3 p.m. All games will be played in West Grand. The top two teams will come out of both pools for bracketed play Saturday with the top three advancing. Good luck to the lady Cowboys as they move on to post-season play.
