MHS girls 3rd at Glenwood Invitational

MEEKER I The girls’ track team placed third in the 30th Demon Invitational hosted Saturday by Glenwood Springs. Fourteen teams participated, many of them 3A and 4A schools, so the coaching staff was very pleased with the results. The guys also had some outstanding performances, taking fifth place in the team standings.
Kathryn Doll led the way for the girls, sprinting to third in both the 100 and the 200 dashes and taking second in the triple jump. Her best result of the day came in the long jump, where she outdistanced the second-place jumper by more than a foot and a half and pre-qualifying for the state meet.
Freshman Cassie Fronatt came in 15th in a field of 36 in the 200, and classmate Kacey Collins placed 21st with a personal record in a field of 43 in the 100. Adrienne Wix, Savannah Johnson and Krystal Otwell all had personal records in the 400 and freshmen Cody Pfau not only smashed her PR but also placed third in the 1,600 in a time of 5:57. The relay teams all bettered their season bests: Kacey Collins, Nicole Hilkey, Perye Walter and Fronatt placed sixth in the 4×100. Adrienne Wix, Timbre Shriver, Fronatt and Kaylyn Edwards ran a strong 4×200 in a time of 1:58 to place fourth and Wix, Johnson, Otwell and Kaysyn Chintala took fifth in the 4×400. Chintala, Otwell, Courtnie Blazon and Pfau ran the 4×800 for the first time this year and finished sixth. The sprint medley relay of Wix, Shriver, Fronatt and Kaylyn Edwards cut four seconds off their time, placing third. Freshmen teammates Amanda Kindall and Jordan Brown placed seventh and eighth in the high jump. Katie Morgan threw the discus for the first time and was 15th in a field of 40 and Bailey Atwood took seventh in the shot put.
For the boys, sophomore Toby Casias again improved on his season bests in the sprints and sprint relays. He came in sixth in the 100 prelims but improved to third in the finals. In the 200, he again claimed third and missed second by two one-hundredths of a second. Jared Frantz attacked the 400 with gusto, dashing 54.4 for sixth place. The 800 was a very exciting race with Meeker’s Brock Campbell dominating the race until Conner Roper from Basalt chased him down and nipped him at the line. Meeker’s sprint relays are both close to pre-qualifying times. The 4×100 of Toby Casias, Colton Brown, Pat Love and Jake Nieslanik almost pulled off a major upset with Nieslanik diving at the line giving the Cowboys third place in a time of 46.58. The 4×200 team of Casias, Brown, Frantz and Nieslanik were just behind Glenwood Springs and Eagle Valley to take third in a very fast time of 1:35.8. Even though the boys were pretty beat up at the end of the day, they ran a respectable 4×400 for fourth place. Brown placed fourth in the high jump and new-comer Alema Atofa just missed at 5-6. Atofa also went over 17-4 in the long jump. Jarrett Waldref had a personal record in the discus throwing 111, and Ryan Wix and Waldref made finals and placed seventh and eighth in the shot put.
This week, Meeker travels to Craig on Friday for the Hayden Tiger Invitational and then to Rifle on Saturday.
