MEEKER I One day before the Christmas break, the Meeker High School girls’ basketball team played the 2A Olathe Pirates on their home court and lost 44-37. Meeker will come back in 2015 and host Cedaredge on Jan. 9, then host Paonia on Saturday, Jan. 10.
Meeker stayed close with Olathe in the first half, down 10-9 at the end of the first quarter and 21-18 at halftime.
Meeker trailed by nine early in the third quarter, but Olathe still took a seven-point lead into the final period.
Meeker had their chances but struggled from the charity line, making only three of 16 free throws.
The lady Cowboys matched Olathe’s scoring in the fourth quarter and lost 44-37.
Sydney Hughes led the team with 18 points, Reese Pertile also finished in double figures with 10. Megan Parker added eight points and Madi Shults made a free throw, to round out Meeker’s scoring.
