MEEKER | The Meeker Cowboys once again have a golf team. It has been nearly seven years since a golf team could call Meeker home and leading the charge is head coach Willy Theos.
This is not Theos’ first rodeo with coaching. He coached wrestling for years. Assisting Theos is volunteer Kyle Hooks.
The Cowboys got the ball rolling for fall 2019 sports, starting a week ahead of all the other sports, and attended their first two tournaments on Aug. 8 in Delta, Colorado, and the following day at Battlement Mesa. Each varsity tournament the team can take five members to play. Representing the Cowboys this last weekend were seniors Elijah Deming, Nick Massey and Phil Arnold, and sophomores Zagar Brown and Peter Hanks.
The team played 18 holes on each course and finished with a combined score of 274 in Delta and 289 at Battlement Mesa.
Individually the scores were: (Delta/Battlement Mesa)
– Phil Arnold—87/97
– Elijah Deming—104/103
– Nick Massey—84/92
– Zagar Brown—139/147
– Peter Hanks—107/100
“It was a great first tournament out of the blocks,” Theos said. “The boys encourage each other on the course and are improving each practice.”
There are three additional boys on the team and coach Theos is hoping for more to join when the official academic school year begins. There will be both varsity and JV tournaments, with the next one being in Fruita on the first day of school, Aug. 19.
