MEEKER I The Meeker hoopsters traveled to Colbran Dec. 15 to cash in another win. Meeker’s intense press once again ignited a quick lead. The lady Cowboys capitalized on Plateau Valley’s turnovers and took a handy 20-10 first quarter lead. Even though Meeker was not shooting well, the ‘Pokes came out and fired up nine points while only allowing two from their opponents in the first four minutes of the second quarter. By half time Meeker stretched their lead 40-16.
Pulling the deadly full court press Meeker dropped to a half man defense and that allowed Plateau Valley to set up their offense. The Cowboys and their namesakes bucketed seven points apiece early in the third for a score of 47-23 with six minutes left to go. The baskets sealed up on both ends of the court when finally Meeker dropped a bucket to make it 49-23 heading into the final stretch. The lady Cowboys scored 19 more points in the fourth and Plateau Valley made 12 to end the game with a controlling victory for Meeker 68-35.
Every Meeker player scored in the game. Kaysyn Chintala led the scoring with 11 points, Taylor Neilson added 10, Aly Ridings, Piper Haney, Sydney Hughes and Amanda Kendall dumped in eight each, Katie Dinwiddie cashed in six, Deena Norell hit five and Bailey Atwood and Kacey Collins each added a bucket.
Head coach Greg Chintala thought the team “came out and played another good ballgame.” With only four turnovers in the game he noted that the team “took care of the ball and our defense is still working hard to create openings for our offense.”
Meeker met Little Snake River at home Wednesday night and travels to Hayden Friday, Dec. 21 to play the Tigers for the second time in three weeks. The teams clashed in the Cowboy shootout where Meeker dominated 65-19.
