MEEKER I The Meeker High School track team performed well in Cedaredge last Saturday and is preparing to compete in the Frank Woodburn Invitational this Saturday at Stocker Stadium in Grand Junction.
“The girls had another solid day despite missing two of their top sprinters,” Meeker Head Track Coach John Strate said about his team without speedsters Halle Ahrens and Madison Russell.
Coach Strate said Ahrens will be out for at least four weeks with a knee injury and Russell is recovering from a pulled muscle.
Coach Strate said Gracie Bradfield “stepped up nicely in the 100-meter dash,” finishing third, two-hundredths of a second out of second place. Loran Casias also scored team points in the 100 dash with a seventh place finish while sophomore Avery Watt placed eighth in the same race.
Bradfield and Casias, along with Sierra Williams and Peyton Burke, ran the 4×100-meter relay, scoring team points with a fourth-place finish, while Bradfield, Burke, Casias and Watt made up the 4×200-meter relay team, which also finished fourth.
Junior Maggie Phelan had a personal best in the 400-meter dash, running the quarter-mile in 65.69, good enough for a fourth-place finish. Bradfield finished fifth, .06 seconds behind Phelan.
Coach Strate said freshman throwers Sydnie Main and Megan Shelton had “another productive day.” Main scored team points with a seventh-place finish in the discus and Shelton scored points with a sixth-place finish in the shot put.
Shelton’s older brother, T.J., led the boys’ team with a third-place finish in the 100 dash. Caleb Bradford also scored team points with a third-place finish in the discus while Cole Brown earned points with a seventh-place finish in the 200-meter dash.
Austin Russell, Josh Cochran, Clay Anderson and Marshal Pool made up the 4×800-meter relay team and finished fifth in the race. Russell also scored team points with a fourth-place finish in the 3,200-meter run.
The Cowboys will run and throw in Stocker Stadium on Saturday in Grand Junction, competing in the Frank Woodburn Invitational.
